#IAMTHEREADER BOOK TAG

I saw this book tag on Booktube ages ago and I'm finally getting around to do it myself. I have not been personally tagged to do this, but I tag everyone who sees this post!
If you have a book blog or a youtube channel, leave the link to your post or video in the comments! If you don't, just put your answers in a comment... I'd love to see how you became a reader! :)

Imaginative!

I think one thing that readers have that some people don't is a great imagination. I think that a big reason some people don't like to read is that they either don't have a big imagination or reading simply doesn't inspire their imagination, even if other forms of art and creativity does.

The very first book I fell in love with...

That's a little iffy. I really got into reading in Middle School, and there were quite a few books I really loved back then. BUT, I believe it was the Drina Dances series by Jean Estoril. I read the first three books for school and while they were not the first books I read solely for the pleasure of reading - considering I read it for a book report - BUT, they were the first books I read and loved.

It really depends. I prefer hardcovers because I feel like they're more durable, they are going to last me longer... and I like the way they look on my bookcases. However, paperbacks are great for travel and to keep in my purse when I'm not home and have a few minutes to read. So, overall, I'd say hardback, that is always what I prefer. But paperback is great for reading away from home; of course, my tablet is also great in that regard!

Reading has shaped who I am in many ways. Reading has allowed me to make use of my mind and my imagination. In many ways, books have shaped my ability to understand myself and how I think. But it's also opened my mind to consider what other people go through, how they think and feel, and given me an open mind. And, naturally, it's also given me the ability to escape when reality gets too intense... or even too boring, lol.

My comfort read used to be The Mediator series by Meg Cabot (https://www.goodreads.com/series/41667-the-mediator) ... it's really funny and has a kick ass heroine, but I think my new comfort read is going to be something I read rather recently - though, I've been following her webcomics online for quite some time - and that is the comedy comics series by Sarah Anderson!

I finally read the two books she's got published, Adulthood is a Myth and Big Mushy Happy Lump and I absolutely loved them! Sarah (AKA Sarah's Scribbles) draws out these short, simple comics that are super funny and so damn relatable, especially for introverts and readers.

I HIGHLY recommend reading her published books and following her on her social media pages. She does post many of the comics on her facebook, twitter, and on webcomics sites, but it's wonderful having them all in a couple books.

I believe my 10th grade English teacher deserves the credit for that. While I did start pleasure reading in middle school, I actually had a very long book hiatus for like... two years where I read nothing. But when we had a book report to do for English class, my teacher, Miss Sundermeyer, helped me find a book to read for it. It was the first book in the Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes series by Laurie R King and I LOVED it! It re-sparked my love for reading; especially since there were so many books in the series. I just kept picking up the next one from the library and I've been a pretty dedicated reader since!

My ideal reading/book nook would use the natural contours and space of the area to fit as many books as possible... without sacrificing lighting (preferably natural lighting) and comfort. I don't like to feel like I'm in an enclosed space, so big windows are ideal.

And if a nice comfy window bench isn't possible, a comfy reading chair or couch would do just as well.

I also want creative shelving to really utilize the wall space.

And, of course, a nice cozy bed is always an ideal reading space... especially at night.

This is a really cool idea... it's just a little too enclosed for me. But cool!

I really don't think there is any one book that can get the credit for changing the way I see the world. I think I've picked up bits and pieces from so many books, particular textbooks from my days in Uni in Psychology and English... so I'm not sure I can name one book, I just don't think it's possible.

For instance, Anne Frank, Ken Saro-Wiwa, Ngugi Wa Thiong'o, and Malala Yousafzai made me see the importance in global politics and activism. Sylvia Plath, Virginia Woolf, Subhadra Sen Gupta, and Jane Austen made me see the importance in feminism and female writers. And while it's YA fiction, Allison Goodman's Eon/Eona duology opened my mind to struggles of transpeople and how they are often treated. Although I myself am bisexual, I'm also cisgendered and prior to the last four years or so, I really had no knowledge of transpeople and the issue they face. Reading about a transcharacter, even a side one, was sort of a wake up to a reality that was very much a mystery to me.

So much of what I've read has improved the way I see people and see the world. It just wouldn't be right to narrow it down to a single book.

Top 5 books, series, or authors I read before I discovered (or outside of) Booktube that are still among my favs.... and other platforms like Goodreads and Bookstagram!

https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/118368-top-5-wednesday

Yeahhhh, I wasn't really able to limit myself to 5. You should all know by now how much I struggle to meet maximums. Sooo... I have 5 Ya books/series, 5 Adult, and five honorable mentions of both!

JK Rowling's Harry Potter series

Tamora Pierce's entire book universes!
Pierce's books are broken down into two universes... Tortall and Emelan.
the Song of the Lioness quartet is where I recommend starting the Tortall universe of books
(there is a prequel trilogy that takes place hundreds of years prior, but it's so far removed from the rest of the books you can read it later. I still haven't read them... I really need to get on that!)

and the Circle of Magic quartet is the beginning of the Emelan Universe
Meg Cabot's The Mediator series
Most people probably know Meg Cabot best for her Princess Diaries series... which I have read some of, but I much prefer her Mediator series! It's an awesome combination of paranormal, strong female protag, romance, and humor. LOVE IT! I've probably re-read the entire series at least three times!
It got a new book a couple years ago and I really hope there are more to come!

Amelia Atwater Rhodes universes of books
AAR's books are also divided into two universes... Den of Shadows (which is centered around vampires, witches, and hunters) and Kiesha'ra (which is centered around shapeshifters)

Alison Goodman's Eon & Eona duology

Ellen Schreiber's Vampire Kisses series

John Peel's The Secret of Dragonhome
